Oldest Soldier to die in Iraq

Riley soldier, 60, oldest to die in Iraq

By Amanda Lee Myers - The Associated Press
Posted : Thursday May 14, 2009 19:32:56 EDT

PHOENIX — The oldest soldier to be killed in Iraq fought in Vietnam and decided to re-enlist at nearly 60 years old after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the death of his wife, according to his brother.

Army Maj. Steven Hutchison, 60, was killed Sunday in Iraq after a homemade bomb went off near his vehicle in Al Farr, according to the Department of Defense.

Richard Hutchison of Scottsdale told The Associated Press that his older brother wanted to re-enlist immediately after the 9/11 attacks, but that his wife Candy didn’t want him to.

But when Candy died of breast cancer, “a part of him died,” so he signed up again in July 2007, according to his brother and the Army.

“He was very devoted to the service and to his country,” Richard Hutchison said. “For somebody to go back into the military at 60 years old, obviously I didn’t want him to do it, but he had a mind of his own and that’s what he wanted to do. He’s been a soldier his whole life.”

He said his brother never explained why he wanted to re-enlist, but that “I’m guessing it had something to do with them coming into our country and killing our people.”

“He wanted to go back in,” he added. “He wanted to do his share.”

He said Steven Hutchison served in Afghanistan for a year after he re-enlisted and went to Iraq in October as a team leader of about a dozen soldiers who would train Iraqi soldiers how to fight. But, he said his brother’s mission changed and that he was working to secure Iraq’s southern border instead.

Army spokesman Lt. Col. Nathan Banks said Thursday that Hutchison was the oldest Army soldier killed in Iraq.

An Associated Press database of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan shows that Hutchison is the oldest member of any service branch killed since the wars broke out.

Richard Hutchison said Steven was a great big brother and a best friend who was always looking out for him. “He took care of me,” he said.

“I was worried about him. I didn’t want him to go [to Iraq],” he said through tears, adding that he loved his brother “so much.”

He said Steven Hutchison worked as a college professor of psychology at a couple of California universities and then worked at a private health care corporation in Arizona before he retired a few years ago.

Steven Hutchison was born in Cincinnati and raised in Long Beach, Calif. He has a half-brother and half-sister living in Michigan. Steven Hutchison married four times, and was married to Candy for 10 years before she died. He had no children.

Richard Hutchison said his brother will be buried next to Candy in Scottsdale, and that a funeral is tentatively planned for Tuesday.

Hutchison was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, at Fort Riley, Kan.

Help Autism Now Society
Posted On 05/01/2009 17:49:31

Thomas Giruc’s HALO-based scenario game kicks off tomorrow at the Warpaint International paintball facility.  The event has been created to benefit HANS - the Help Autism Now Society.

Thomas was inspired to host the event by his friend Jason Lee, who’s younger brother is autistic and who’s parents run the HANS organization.

Thomas plays and helps out at Dan Bonebrake’s Warpaint field facility; Dan - a long time presence in the sport - remarked that it is gratifying to see what Thomas is doing with his love for the game;  while most other players Thomas’s age are begging for paintball guns, Thomas is organizing games for charity.

The event has caught the eye of at least one local newspaper - the StatesmanJournal, which offers some more in-depth cover of the up-coming event.

-

When 68Caliber established the ‘Family Paintball’ logo and concept, THIS is exactly the kind of thing we had in mind.  We applaud Thomas for his efforts in demonstrating that paintball can be used to raise awareness of all kinds of charitable causes, we applaud Dan Bonebrake of Warpaint International for getting behind it and supporting Thomas’ efforts, we applaud HANS for their efforts and willingness to embrace paintball and we applaud the StatesmanJournal for covering the event in a responsible manner.

Even if you will not be attending the game, 68Caliber is positive that either Warpaint or HANS will be more than willing to accept donations for their cause if you wish to make one.

Tournament paintball on the Decline
Posted On 04/27/2009 18:30:56

With only three weeks left between now and the second USPL event of the season, held at Pev's Paintball in Virginia, the league's website shows zero paid teams in D-3, Five-Man, D-3, Seven-Man, D-2, Seven-Man and D-1, Seven-Man. The only teams that have paid entry fees so far are eight of the Pro teams. On the other side of the pro/am tournament world the PSP has not announced its World Cup dates, nor the much talked-about PSP Regional series dates. Down a level the CFOA, which routinely drew 100-plus teams last year, is not drawing half that in '09. What's going on?

Paintball Horror film
Posted On 04/27/2009 16:39:21

Another “stab” at the paintball horror genre, “Paintball” (The Movie) drops 8 thrill seeking strangers in a game worth winning- survival. When the bullets start flying instead of paintballs, all hell breaks loose. The movie was screened this weekend at the Tribeca film festival, with reviews seeming somewhat positive by non-industry folk who saw the movie. The film places an adrenaline induced society in front of the mirror for a startling look at culture and survival in general. Additional screenings will be taking place throughout the week.
