FPO
Posted On 02/03/2010 22:02:06

Okay, have you ever questioned how commercial paintball fields are run? I mean, what makes a good paintball field good? Are all fields the same? Or are there some fields somewhere that are run by individuals that think outside of the box?

It seems that most fields these days are FPO (field paint only), and some allow BYOP (bring your own paint) but charge you a fee to use it. Here is where a lot of fields seem to mess up in my opinion.... See, many players are particular about what type or brand of paint they use in their guns, and many of the FPO fields only offer 1-3 types of paint ranging from low - high grade. The problem here is that what works for some guns, doesn't work for all and if you show up at a field and are at the mercy of their selection of paint (or substitution should their original order go FUBAR) and the enjoyment of your day usually starts out with how well your marker is functioning and how well the paint you are using is performing. If the paint they made you use is crap, well then your day is crap, and you just paid for a day of crap. This doesn't bode well for many people, and for some may even prevent them from returning to the field. This has been the norm for some time now. BYOP would solve this problem, but it is ridiculous to have to pay to use it especially if it is a paint purchased from another paintball field and is fresh and safe (could easily be inspected).

Okay, I know what you're thinking... Paintball fields are FPO because this is how they make their money.. yada yada yada. No, this is how they choose to make their money, this is how the industry taught them to make their money. This is what is preventing many players from playing at commercial fields, this is why many players that are friends of mine would rather come and play at our home field because it's free and BYOP. Even if there aren't many bunkers or forts and etc. It's just that many players just want to get out and play, but don't want to drop a fortune on playing paintball for a day.

See, paintball isn't actually dying like most think. Many veteran players are just simply quitting or holding off until the recession get's better (gonna be a while). Well, by doing that they are killing paintball and don't even know it. They all think that they are just one person and they don't make a difference. So, the industry now has their sites set on gaining new players by targeting people that have never played before. Out with the old and in with the new, at least that's what it seems like with all of the entry level markers coming out these days. This is generally a good idea for paintball gun manufacturers and online stores, at least for short term. But if the fields don't start changing their ways too, and start catering to these new players (and the ones that are toughing this out) by being more realistic about the cost of a day of paintball, then most players will just choose to play casually on their own property with friends for free, and many fields will continue to close.

I know insurance companies and paintball manufactures play a big part in how fields are run, but I think field owners should unite and come up with a solution rather than stand alone and fall.

I have an idea that will help to keep the ball rolling on this site. For everytime that you log in, choose a random post in the forum and reply to it. Even if it's not the most detailed reply, just a brief sentence with some initial feedback on the topic will get things going. If we all do this, the site activity will go up tremendously and will help to gain more members and potential advertisers that help to fund this site.

So remember, before you log out, go into the forum and pick a random topic and reply to the last post.

Paintball Guns and their owners
Posted On 10/30/2009 07:51:03

With paintball guns in the very name of this site, and being a place where players can showcase their guns and themselves. I decided to create a blog that shows what this site is about - Paintball Guns and their owners. Please search your galleries and elsewhere for the best picture that you can find that shows you and your gun (you can post two seperate pics if need be) and add them here in this blog so it can display the variety of Paintball Guns and their owners that reside here on the best networking site for paintballers.

Adding photos in the blog: If your picture is in the gallery on this site, just copy the URL in the description just below the photo and then in the blog submit box click on the small tree icon (insert image) and paste the URL there. If your photo is on another site, simply right click and click properties then copy the URL.

Battle of the Paintball Guns
Posted On 10/27/2009 08:30:28

It has been an interesting couple of years for Tippmann and BT. Some would say they have been battling to control the woodsball market. For every new marker that each company releases, the other releases their alternative. Tippmann of course, has been dominating the budget woodsball scene with the Alpha Black since 2008 and has now been completely dominating this scene with the release of the Project Salvo. Finally, in response BT is going to release the BT OMEGA with a very affordable price to compete directly with the Alpha Black and Project Salvo. It will be a tough challenge to compete against two very affordable, and reliable markers with just one, but I am interested in seeing how it will do.

The Tippmann TPX has been in the spotlight for most of this year and has set the standard for BT to contend with. Of course BT would not sit by without a fight, their answer to the TPX is the BT SA-17, where in my opinion was a very weak response (in looks), but it does have some extra functions that may test true in time.

Next we have BT's TM7 which has been dominating the woodsball market with it's savy electropneumatic features, and then stack the release of the TM15 on top of that and they had raised the bar. But Tippmann had something up their sleeve for some time now, they seemed to wait just until BT thought they had won and then they shot them down with their new revolutionary X7 Phenom. The Phenom can operate in a way that no other paintball gun can, it can operate electronically with several different firing modes, or if the battery dies, it can still fire in mechanical mode thanks to it's patented Flex Valve. Can the Phenom overcome the TM duo? Only time will tell, but it looks like it has a great chance.

Let's take advantage of this situation as it helps to create affordable prices the more these guys battle it out. Be sure to visit www.reddotpaintball.com to purchase or pre-order these markers as they become available!

New Paintball Gun
Posted On 10/21/2009 12:54:59

Tippmann just announced their new X7 Phenom marker! The marker utilizes a new patented Flex Valve technology that enables the marker to fire electronically or mechanically! It is smaller and lighter than the original X7 and can accept most of the X7 upgrades. More details can be found here:

The Future of Paintball Guns
Posted On 10/18/2009 19:15:10

The time is almost near.... GI MILSIM is about to unleash their revolutionary plan to everyone, and it will be up to us to make the final grade on their outcome. First thing, for those who are unaware of GI MILSIM and their plan... Richmond Italia and the Gardner brothers of Smart Parts and many others have formed a coalition to "Revolutionize" paintball as we know it. Ever since paintball has been on the decline, and the very popular tourney style paintball has started to turn towards the woods again, these guys started trying to figure out what went wrong. Long knowing that most tourney ballers' sponsors furnished all or most of their gear and paint, that when these sponsors went under along with many of them being the field owners that hosted their practice games, they figured they would have to do something to get those players to gain an interest in buying their own paint and gear and return to the game. Thus, the .50 caliber solution was born (or reborn) to drive down the cost of paint, and also allow these players to carry more paint at one time, what more could they want!? Well, first, the sponsors will need to front the $$$ for all of their guns to be converted to .50 cal or buy the new guns. Then, the task of having everyone to purchase their own paint and get back to playing will commence. In the mean time, while reducing caliber size and making these more affordable paintballs, why not make some MilSim style markers and try to markert to that crowd as well? That's where many tourney ballers started to venture anyways, so let's try to bring them back? So, they added some MilSim style markers that can be mag or hopper fed and added MilSim to their name and ran with it. Now, with their long awaited release just around the corner, and the critics knocking at their door.... Will they do it? Will they "Revolutionize" paintball? Only time will tell, and just remember this... We are the ones that can decide the Future of Paintball Guns! In my honest opinion, I think that all paintball store and field owners will be hurt tremendously if this .50 cal thing takes over, they will have money invested in .68 cal equipment down the drain, and all .68 cal rental markers will have to be replaced or converted just to keep up. So, keep this in mind before you blindly jump onto the .50 cal bandwagon, wait until all tests have been done proving that this actualy is an improvement that we need, and not just a gimmick that some failing paintball industry reps are trying to force on us.

Backup Paintball Guns
Posted On 10/13/2009 11:20:48

You wake up at the crack of dawn, the anticipation is growing inside, you go over your check list and load your gear into your car. Did you forget anything? Looks good so far, so now you head to your team's rendezvous point. Upon entering the restaurant and everyone seeing you and your team dressed up like your going to war, you begin to feel like you belong to something. Little do these typical civilians know, but you are off to fight along side your friends in what may be the most epic battle you've ever engaged in. You tell a few people what you are going to do, and they say things like: does it hurt? where do you play? and my favorite, why do you play? I answer the best way that I can by explaining that it's an adrenaline rush, comradery and good sportsmanship, and it brings you back to life. It's a feeling that you will never understand unless you get out there and play. You leave for the field, hoping that you've inspired more to play. Now you start focusing on the matter at hand, what teams will be there? how many players will there be? will this game go smoothly? or will there be cheating and misconduct?

You show up at the game and immediately see some old friends, you start gearing up, socialize with the crowd and are happy to see that everything seems to be going smoothly. Briefing is only 30 minutes away and game on is just after that, the anticipation is really setting in. You are geared up, do your rounds to check with your team mates and make sure they are ready, when POW!, you are hit with the news that 3 of your team mates have their guns broken down and working on them with the briefing coming up in now 25 minutes! Now you panic, you ask what's wrong? One tells you that they can't get it to fire, the other tells you that they can't get adjust their FPS and etc. One thing that people don't realize is that when you are working on your gun right before a big game, and what seems like minutes is actually taking you hours. Your team is about to go into battle without you, it's now too late to borrow a gun (even though you probably wouldn't want to use someone's old View Loader anyways), and now you will sit there and miss the first part of the game.

What could have been done by these players to avoid such a mishap? Work on their guns faster? Get someone else to fix them? No, the answer is simple..... Get a backup gun! Every player needs a backup gun, doesn't matter if it's the nicest gun, but when troubles arise you will have it. Now if you are a picky individual, and have to have something to play with that looks cool and all that, then spend less on your primary setup so that you can get a decent backup gun.

I will leave you with one of my favorite sayings: It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
