Post your thoughts and opinions about it.

I know it is highly impractical for actual play. But c'mon.... its a freakin shield. Wouldnt you want one just for "fun and games"?

Im not saying they should sell shields cuz that wouldnt go to well. But for example, my TV cabinet door fell off and instead of scrapping it. im making it into a sort of shield. i also spray painted it dark green. So far looks really nice. just gotta attatch  two straps for hand and arm.

I'll probably use it just for messin around so my team mates can shoot eachother. and also it will probably be good for videos.

I've seen them used in Sci-Fi scenarios before, more or less they are not for a tactical game of paintball, more just goofing around.

DO YOU EVER SEE A SOILDER CARRING A SHIELD DURING A FIREFIGHT, MY PERSONAL OPINION THEY HAVE NO PLACE IN SCENARIO PAINTBALL, AND SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED

I personally don't like the idea of shields in paintball.  I just feel it's cheating in a sense.

It think that they can fit in well with particularly written events, such as sci-fi for example. The story line may reference a protective shield and the event producer may feel thats in essential part of the storyline. In a event where paintball is being used as a means of reinactment or simluation then a shield may also be part of the story line or a possible selection of loadout. There are units with the law enforcement and military community that do have Level III-A ballistic shields (these are not the clear riot shields), to include the windowed portion (veiw port) and they have been employed against targets and suspects. I personally think if an event producer allows them certain kit/game-play restrictions should established and enforced by staff and referees.

You almost mount that on your Segway, for all your 2-wheeled urban assault needs. (laf)

I read somewhere...do not remember who it was though, one of their rules were basically, if you carried a shield of any kind you were not permitted to carry a marker as well.

I think if it pertains to the mission or storyline with adequate rules & supervision it could be fun.

@quags

Maybe soldiers dont have shields because it wouldnt help them at all. SWAT and Police use the Riot Shield. Because under their circumstances, it would be quite useful.

And it could be useful for scenario games. Lets say the scenario is a giant riot outbreak. Why not incorporate shields?

Also as ziggy said about the sci-fi scenario with sheilds. That would work well too.

Tactical Ten Paintball League has recently been extended to Arizona, thanks in large part to the efforts of Welted Paintball. http://www.weltedpaintball.com/

The game is something like SPPL but has more of a flavor of SWAT meets speedball.
Teams have Medics, Snipers and other Roles, special weapons inc. rocket launchers,
paint and smoke grenades, plus SWAT type shields (which suffer various effects from grenades, rockets, and sniper fire.) Each game has a Mission, anything from finding the explosives and then placing them to blow the target, to hostage rescue. Marker ROF isn't capped but hopper size and total ammo is limited.

near Phoenix a great new field, Fightertown, is hosting the TTPL with a special field

I think using shields in paintball is a waste of time. Myself, I go to play paintball to play paintball, not carry a shield around and become a high profile target.

This is where the mentality of the players come in...

Having a shield may take a marker system off the field but if it is employed right it will become a objective/mission enabler. That shield may get you closer and further into the other teams area without the loss of friendly numbers and without firing one paintball. This pattern of thinking and behavior is more common among the scenario/MILSIM/Woodsball players, mostly due to the amount of players per side and the design of the event, but the players (not all of them of course) in general are more about winning as a "Joint Force" then as individual.

My last game of the season(OCT 09) of the 38 hours of play I didn't even have a marker for at least 26 of them ...this was due to markers failing on the front line teams. I gave them all mine and acted as recon/prop grabber/runner. Granted I was acting as General 1/2 of that time but you can be just as devastating to the other team without a marker as you can with a marker. Plus a good portion of the time General was instant resurrection!
